History of the Republic of Iraq

Iraq is a country in the middle east consisting of approximately 169,000 square miles.  It is bordered by Iran on the east, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the Persian Gulf on the south, Turkey on the north and Syria and Jordan on the west.

Originally a monarchy, it became a republic in 1958 and a dictatorship in 1968, which came under the control of Saddam Hussein in 1979.  The country stayed in the control of Saddam Hussein until his overthrow in 2003.

Iraq has the potential to become one of the richest countries in the world due to its huge oil and natural gas deposits.

The numbers speak for themselves.  In 2005 the U.S. produced 7.0 percent of the World’s oil supply, while we used 24.7%.  Each year, over the past five, the amount of oil we have produced has dropped significantly, resulting in a 1.5 thousand barrel per day drop in oil production from 2001 to 2005.
