Richard was just ending his sophomore year at Syracuse University and after spending their honeymoon in Toronto, they returned to Syracuse to live at 104 Bristol Place, near Thornden Park, which was within walking distance of the University.  Each morning the happy groom would walk his new bride through Thornden Park to the University where Joan worked at the Bursar’s office earning $40.00/week.

Richard would then attend classes at the University and after classes would walk to Union Mutual Life Insurance Company located in downtown Syracuse to his part-time job writing insurance proposals for $1.25/hour.

After work Richard would walk home and the money the couple saved by not having an automobile helped pay for Richard’s education.

Richard had a second part-time job at the Business Research Center doing research projects a couple days a month.  The three incomes, along with the $110.00 a month he received on the GI Bill, and reduced tuition, due to Joan working at the Bursar’s office, made it possible for the couple to get by until Richard graduated from the University.

This beautiful marriage produced three children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who all come to visit the Walrath’s at their home located in Columbus Ohio.
